The city police have registered an FIR against Ponty Chadha — the sole distributor of liquor in Uttar Pradesh — and other unnamed associates, after the body of a 35-year-old man was found in front of one of the liquor shops in Amnabad area in Bisrakh (Greater Noida) on Wednesday morning.

The family of the victim, identified as Phire Singh, has alleged that Chadha is selling bad quality liquor in the state, which is also the reason behind Singh’s death.

The agitated residents blamed the shop owner for selling illicit liquor and burnt liquor bottles outside the shop.

“Singh was a habitual drinker and was single. Everyone in the village thinks he died due to consumption of poisonous alcohol. There were regular complainants against the shop that they were overcharging and were selling bad quality liquor,” said one of the villagers.

“We have registered an FIR and have sent the dead body to ascertain the cause of death,” said Ashok Kumar, Superintendent of Police (Rural).
