Fire in Burdwan Medical College blood bank

A fire broke out at the blood bank of the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday damaging machinery used in testing critical illness like HIV and Hepatitis B.

A fire broke out at the blood bank of the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday damaging machinery used in testing critical illness like HIV and Hepatitis B.

Hospital superintendent T K Ghosh said the fire, suspected to have been caused by short circuit, was noticed at around 11 am and was doused by two fire engines after about half an hour. None was injured in the fire, the fourth this year in the blood bank.

Ghosh said the fire damaged machinery and computers worth over Rs 10 lakh.

Testing for jaundice, malaria and Eliza test, besides those for HIV and Hepatitis B would be affected due to the fire, he added.
