The students have been instructed to appear before AU proctor Prof Jata Shankar on Monday afternoon with a written explanation for their conduct following which the AU Proctorial Board will take the decision on the action to be taken against them.
The ragging incident had taken place in the Physics department of the varsity on Friday afternoon when four BSc-II students cornered a few first year girl students and started to rag them.
While the students were busy ragging, they were spotted by the varsity’s cricket coach who chased and nabbed three of them and handed them over to the members of the AU proctorial team. The fourth culprit too was later identified and caught.
Another student was nabbed by member of the AU proctorial team which responded after getting a complaint about the ongoing ragging in the varsity’s science faculty.
Identity cards of all the five students were confiscated and they were ordered to report at the proctor’s office at 3 pm on Saturday. On being contacted, AU proctor Prof Jata Shankar said that ragging is a serious offence and the varsity will not allow it under any circumstance.
“I received the report of the incident this morning. I have served showcause notices to all the five students and they have been asked to appear at the proctor’s office on Monday at 3 pm with written explanation for their conduct.
We will then take the decision regarding punishment,” he said.
