The operation had slowed down a bit after the exit of former SSP Navniet Sekera, who bumped off as many as 12 criminals in eight months.
On Friday, the cops claimed to have shot dead one more during an encounter in Mandion.
He has been identified as Barabanki history-sheeter Chetram who carried a reward of Rs 5000 on his head.
Just on Thursday, Kaiserbagh police gunned down two criminals.
In Friday’s incident, the police recovered two country-made pistols, cartridges and a diary containing names of several significant persons including leading politicians.
Over two-dozen cases, including those of murder and dacoity, were pending against Chetram in the State Capital and Barabanki. The cops collected villagers on the spot and were seen convincing the gathering about exchange of fire between them and the gangster.
Station officer (SO) Madiaon NK Pandey claimed that he was patrolling in the area along with the police team when he spotted three youths near Tahiyamubaraqpur village. Pandey claimed that the trio started running away seeing the police team while the latter chased the youths. Finding the cops close to them the trio started opening fire aiming the cops, Pandey claimed.
The police team too retaliated the firing killing one of the miscreants on the spot while rest managed to give police the slip.
SO Pandey claimed that the police team had engaged in cross firing with the criminals for over 20 minutes.
The cops later identified the killed gangster as Chetram, a native of Jehangirabad, Barabanki and registered as a history-sheeter (62-A) in the records of Jehangirabad police station.
The police claimed that Chetram was wanted in several cases of robbery from Barabanki.
The SO also claimed that Chetram had executed a house robbery in Madiaon last year and was wanted since then. Pandey, however, failed to refer to any recent case of the gangster.
He revealed that Chetram and his gang had robbed cash, jewellery and crude opium worth lakhs from the house of Shripal Yadav in Ram Sanehighat area on March 28 2001.
Besides, the SO said the same gang had raided Pullan Verma’s house at Mau in Barabanki on August 26 2000 and had robbed valuables killing Verma’s uncle Rajaram and injuring family members critically.
The Madiaon police, however, could not refer any recent case committed by Chetram and his gang.
