The sentenced persons include Ansar (husband), Manuddin (father- in law), and Nisar, Kamruddin and Mukhtar (brother in laws).

Rehana, sister of Abdul Matin, resident of Jaitpura area, had been married to Ansar, son of Jamaluddin in 1998. Later, the in-laws started mounting pressure for dowry and failing which, they burnt the woman to death.
Matin had lodged an FIR with Jaitpura police on January 7, 1999, that the in-laws had been mounting pressure on his sister for a Luna moped and Rs 10,000 in dowry. Since the demand of dowry was not met, they killed his sister, he alleged.
Suicide: A 22 year-old married woman committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling in her house at Yusufpur village under the Shadiabad police station in Ghazipur today. The deceased has been identified as Shubhawati Devi, wife of Santosh. The cause of suicide has not been established yet.
