The younger Mukherjee, however, said Bengal was only a start and he was not reluctant to take up bigger responsibilities in future.

“I idolise Pranab Mukherjee for his integrity and honesty and it just so happens that he is my father,” said Mukherjee who resigned and was relieved from state-owned Steel Authority of India Ltd only last week. “When you are in close proximity to a man of such stature, it is difficult not to be inspired.”

Mukherjee started his career with Maruti Udyog Ltd in the late 80’s followed by a stint with BHEL and SAIL, where he was in charge of corporate social responsibility.

“If I were ambitious, I would carry on in SAIL as becoming a CEO in the next 10 years is well within my reach,” he said. “Rather it is my desire to fulfil the dream of doing something for my home town and home state where my ancestors came from, that egged me to take the plunge.”

He will be filing his nomination for Nalhati town in Birbhum district. “We all have to start somewhere and I am starting my journey from here,” he said. “Who knows what the destination is?”
