Mayawati on Sunday told the party leaders and workers "do not give gold, silver or costly gifts on my birthday, but only hard cash. Observe my birthday as sahyog diwas and donate funds to the party coffer".

Addressing the party MPs, MLAs and office-bearers, she said her birthday would be celebrated on January 15. "Do not present costly gifts but give funds to run the party machinery".

Members of the Bhaichara Banao committee were directed to contribute a minimum amount of Rs 25,000 to the party fund.

She explained why she was laying stress on cash. "Crores of rupees are spent on the organisation each year. I am not collecting fund from business houses but I am dependent on the leaders and workers to raise funds. The contribution would help me in meeting an year's expenditure on the organisation", she said.

"I am also collecting funds from the ticket-seekers and this will also go into the party coffer. A big fund would be required for the election campaign in three states including UP, Uttaranchal and Punjab", she said.
