The government had sought a quick delivery of the luxury car, sources in the General Administration Department said.

Earlier in August 2005, a Ford Endeavour car costing Rs 1.5 million was bought for Raje to replace the Ambassador car. However, it was returned and would now be replaced by the "cheapest" model of Mercedes, an E Class.

The Rajasthan government is also likely to buy a charter plane worth Rs 250 million and would also spend Rs 15 million on Toyota Innova cars for ministers.

In 2005, the government had purchased a helicopter costing Rs 200 million.

The government had also spent Rs 7 million for Tata Indigo cars for the chief minister's cabinet - but many of the ministers did not like the new cars and returned them to the state's motor garage department.
