Kamal Sadanah?s debut Karkash is about the transformation of an illiterate exploited woman to a person who controls the situation.

He brushes aside any similarity between him and one-time best friend – Bollywood’s latest poster boy Saif Ali Khan. Former actor Kamal Sadanah, like Saif-on-a-roll-right-now, has a lot to celebrate as the debutant director of Karkash (Brute), a film which “I always wanted to make,” as he says. Sadanah is the son of yesteryears’ big-time director Brij who made Victoria No. 203 and Ek Se Badhkar Ek.

But where did he disappear after films like Rang (co-starring Divya Bharati) and Rock Dancer? “I wasn’t much interested in doing the inane masala movies,” pat comes the seemingly well-rehearsed answer.

In the intervening years, he also watched many films “to get to know cinema better”, besides trying to restore some of “my father’s films, which were losing their quality,” he shares.

Former actor Kamal Sadanah’s directorial debut Karkash was screened at the Cinefan film festival recently

His film

Karkash

was screened at the ongoing 7th Osian’s Cine film festival in the city. “It is about today’s woman who takes control. It’s also a story I strongly believe in,” he reflects. The bold film starring TV actor Anoop Soni and VJ turned actor Suchitra Pillai starts off as a hackneyed tale of a chauvinistic husband’s daily dose of torture on his hapless, illiterate wife until she takes charge and “gives it back to him.”

Though made on a shoestring budget, the film’s shock value is enough for viewers to sit up and take note, and perhaps ignore its shoddy production values. But Sadanah is confident of reaching out to the masses. “I’m looking for distributors and since it is about a woman, it should click,” he says.

Next on the agenda is a thriller, which should be reminiscent of his father’s fast-paced style of filmmaking. Would erstwhile best friend Saif Ali Khan star in it? “I would say we are good friends but don’t get to meet very often,” he leaves it at that, rather enigmatically.
