FORMER hockey player Rajni Patel, who represented India in 1988 as a member of the under-19 team, has lodged a complaint with the Vikas Nagar police on Thursday, alleging that her husband and in-laws were harassing her for not bringing adequate dowry.
Significantly, despite directives issued by SSP GK Goswami, the cops did not register a case till late in the evening. The complainant and her parents were kept waiting at the police station as the station officer (SO) was away. The case was finally registered in the night against Vikas, his parents Kamta Prasad and Kanti and two sisters. No action, however, has been initiated into the matter.
Rajni (31), was married to Vikas on November 1, 2000 but lived in Gorakhpur as she was employed with the NER Headquarters there. She was allegedly being forced by her husband and in-laws to get transferred to Lucknow..On June 2, 2002, she succeeded in getting transferred and came to Lucknow. Rajni said, “My husband and his sisters hurled expletives and assaulted me frequently on some pretext. First they forced me to get transferred to Lucknow, then they started harassing me. At times Vikas hit me so brutally that I needed a doctor.
My husband also warned me that he did not want children and just wanted to help his brother and sister to bring up their children..”
Rajni further alleged that her father LBS Chaudhary, had given a two-wheeler to Vikas at the time of marriage. But, her husband and in-laws were forcing her to ask her father for a car and had started torturing her , but since her father was a retired person, he was unable to fulfill their demands. Talking to HT, Rajni said she had gone to the Mahila police station too but the station officer forced her for a compromise with Vikas. She had to visit the SSP later who ordered the Vikas Nagar police to lodge an FIR.
Rajni’s husband works as a typist at the Secretariat and lives in Vikas Nagar. Rajni has played in the under-19 team and represented India in Hungary in 1988.
In 1989-90, she represented the country in Malaysia and Japan.
Bula Ganguly, Secretary UP Women’s Hockey Association said, “I know Rajni since she was very young and she is a very disciplined girl.” However, Rajni’s husband Vikas Patel could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
