The deaths occurred in the first attack that took place in Batticaloa. The bomb, attached to a bicycle, went off as an army truck passed by. Twenty three others were wounded in that attack, said a local military commander.

Thirteen policemen, seven soldiers and three others were wounded in another attack in the same area, which occurred shortly after the first one.

The third blast, a mine attack, in the neighbouring district of Trincomalee, wounded another 13 people, including two sailors and a policeman.
