Addressing students at IIT Kanpur, Sreedharan informed that the work related to laying of metro rail network had been initiated in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and Mumbai. He further informed that the second phase of work of metro network had already started in Delhi and the work of laying the new metro tracks in Kolkata was already under progress. “The first metro rail network was started in Kolkata in 1972. But only 17 km of the track could be laid in 22 years in phases.”
However in Delhi, the scenario was totally different, as 65 km of the network was laid within a span of only 7 years and 3 months, Sreedharan informed.
Comparing the Delhi and Kolkata metro rail networks, Sreedharan said, “The Kolkata metro rail network proved to be the most loss generating project while the Delhi metro proved to a profitable one from day one.” He informed that the first phase of the project in Delhi was completed three years ago due to an altogether different work culture.
Later, talking to Hindustan Times, Sreedharan said, “Metro technologies of several countries including that of Japan and Germany had been used in Delhi.” “Now India does not need to import any technology for the construction of metro network. The technology which had been used in Delhi will be used elsewhere,” Sreedharan asserted. He also pointed out that metro network was profitable only in four counties and Delhi metro was one of them.
