The victims were on a routine patrol in Kathankudy in the district of Batticaloa when they were ambushed with a Claymore mine, officials said.

Two soldiers and a policeman were killed in a similar blast in the northern district of Vavuniya on Wednesday.

The attack came ahead of a visit by Norwegian peace envoy Erik Solheim to Sri Lanka on Friday for talks with both the government and the Tigers in a bid to salvage a four-year-old ceasefire.
