The police personnel escorting the van carrying inmates returning from court hearings in Mewat had gone to fetch a liquor bottle when they escaped, a police official said.
The undertrials reportedly bribed the policemen with Rs 300 for buying liquor.
Two of the four inmates who escaped were involved in the Rs 80 lakh robbery in Mewat last year in which a police personnel was also gunned down, police said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) I.S. Saini said there were 27 inmates in the van that was escorted by 16 police personnel. The van had taken the undertrials to Mewat court on Wednesday morning. “On their way back, two undertrials lured the police personnel with Rs 500. The constables returned Rs 200 to them and got down to get liquor when the van was just 2-3 kms away from jail. The four constables got down from the rear leaving the door unattended,” he said.
Saini said Aleem, Ramesh, Naresh and Sunder escaped and the policemen did not realise it till the time the van reached the jail. “The jail administration found that four inmates were missing.
All the policemen escorting the van would face departmental action as they apparently connived with criminals and let them flee, the DCP said.
