John Galliano has never been short on histrionics. Now, the editing and film world will pay tribute to his theatrical skills. Showstudio.com has commissioned Editing Fashion, a project where material from Galliano's Spring Summer 2006 show at Paris Fashion Week is given out to 12 international film professionals from different genres.
The task is to cut the eight hour footage to create a five minute package. Among the "genres" from which editors have been chosen are feature film, independent art film, pornography, music promo, commercials and yes, Bollywood.
While the feature film candidate is Mike Figgis (of Leaving Las Vegas fame), the Bollywood entrant is Apurva Asrani, who has worked on Sunhil Sippy's Snip and Ram Gopal Var ma's Satya, among others. The footage, unusual even by Galliano's standards, is from a show meant to challenge accepted notions of beauty, and has midgets, octogenarians, obese people walking the runway.
"Besides the fact that cutting eight hour footage to five minutes is difficult, this is a challenging project because there is a musical, sexual, dramatic angle to it and each person will interpret the material according to his or her own cultural identity," says Asrani. As for his interpretation, he says: "Maybe because song and dance is in our culture, mine is a happy little video."
