THE CITY police on Thursday claimed to have bust a gang of dacoits that had committed robberies in Bhopal and neighbouring districts like Hoshangabad, Vidisha and Raisen in the recent past.
The gang was caught from the bushes near Yadgar-e-Shahjehani Park when they were planning a dacoity, the police said. During interrogation the gang members confessed to a loot in Koh-e-Fiza, robberies in Dolaria and Pagdhal in Hoshangabad, robbery worth Rs 2.5 lakh in Pawarkheda, Rs 2 lakh robbery at Babai and loot of Rs 20,000 from Shivpur in Hoshangabad.
Six people have been arrested while two gang members have been absconding. Eight motorcycles used for committing robberies have been recovered from them. Four of them were robbed while three were stolen. On the basis of an informer’s tip-off the Talaiya police laid siege and caught the gang members. Two gang members, Sanjay and Nandu, managed to escape.
Those arrested include gang leader, Rafiq Kala, Mahesh Dhurve, Asad, Santosh, Ehsan Ali and Mukesh. A country-made revolver and live cartridges were recovered from Rafiq while knives were seized from the rest.
Rafiq, a native of Obaidullahganj, has 23 criminal cases against him in Bhopal and Hoshangabad. The other gang members arrested in the raid are also wanted in connection with several heinous crimes.
During interrogation, the accused told the police that they stole motorcycles and later used them for robbery. They spotted traders and chased them and robbed them of their cash either by throwing chilli powder in eyes or at knifepoint.
They were planning to rob a petrol pump when they were caught late on Wednesday night. Mostly they committed robberies in neighbouring districts and to avoid the police lived in Bhopal. The police are interrogating the accused.
