"India itself has struggled and attained freedom from British. The same right is denied to the people of Kashmir," said 84-year-old Geelani.

Asking people to observe a complete shutdown on August 15, Geelani said, "India made commitments to the people here that they will be given their right to determine their future but it backtracked from her promises."

He said observing a complete shutdown would "remind the Indian rulers its forgotten promises."

The separatist leader also paid tributes to separatist Sheikh Abdul Aziz, who was killed six years ago.
