As the High Command remained cold on the role it envisages for Rahul Gandhi, a senior party leader on Thursday said he would like the young leader to be a Congress General Secretary instead of "limiting" him to Uttar Pradesh.

"I will like Rahul Gandhi to become a Congress General Secretary as this will result in his influence spreading all over the country including Uttar Pradesh", AICC General Secretary Ashok Gehlot told reporters.

Gehlot, who is in charge of party affairs in UP, suggested that it would not be in the interest of the Congress to limit his role to a single state.

Asked about the Amethi MP's statement expressing readiness to lead the party in UP ahead of the crucial Assembly polls next year, Gehlot said he was not aware what Gandhi has said.

At the same time, he insisted that he would favour the young leader to become AICC General Secretary in charge of frontal organisations, a post which would help him to work for the youth.

There has been growind demand in the party for long, including at the AICC Plenary in Hyderabad recently, for giving Rahul, son of Congress President Sonia Gandhi, a major responsibility in the organisation.
