IN A tragic incident, a five-year-old girl, who was taking part in a marriage procession from village Hariakheri (Sanver), was killed when she was accidentally shot with a 12-bore gun. She died during treatment at a private hospital in Indore.

According to Sanver SDOP Rajesh Pingolia, the girl - Pappi daughter of Babulal resident of Dilip Nagar (Indore) - had gone to take part in a marriage at Hariakheri. The groom’s procession was going from Hariakheri to Lasudia village in Dewas, and as is the custom among Thakurs, shots were fired in the air to celebrate the occasion.

Ajab Singh Thakur resident of Ketawada village, who was also part of the marriage procession, was checking his 12-bore gun to see whether it was functioning properly or not when it fired accidentally.

Pingolia said it was possible that only a blank was fired, but the gunpowder inside the cartridge was sufficient to cause the entire blood becoming poisoned. He said a detailed postmortem report was awaited to see whether the girl received any pellet injuries or not.

Soon after the incident, the girl was rushed to the local hospital in Sanver from where she was referred to a private hospital in Indore. However, the private hospital demanded Rs 25,000 for the operation up front, which the family could not arrange.

By the time she was operated upon at another private hospital in Indore, it was too late and she died. Police said that a case under Section 304 A would be registered against Ajab Singh Thakur.

Haider is a mechanic and Mashooq a notorious thief, and police believe that once the latter is arrested a number of theft cases would be solved. Haider had kept the stolen vehicles at the back of his house, from where police recovered them.
