The US-based Committee to Protect Journalists has said the Bangladesh government has "failed" to protect journalists and demanded action against those responsible for attacks against the press.

"We join our colleagues in Bangladesh in demanding immediate action against those responsible for these flagrant attacks," said CPJ executive director, Ann Cooper, referring to attack on a journalists' rally and the office of local Andoloner Bazar daily three days ago in western Kushtia district.

Quoting Bangladesh media, the CPJ in a statement released in New York yesterday said the attackers were supporters of Shahidul Islam, MP, of ruling BNP.

Among the 20 injured journalists, was Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, president of a journalists' union.
