The Centre has mooted a proposal to set up a university for the benefit of children of People of Indian Origin (PIOs) and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).
As per the proposal, they will be offered 50 per cent of the seats for all courses, including those in engineering and medicine.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has convened a meeting of the ministers concerned on June 13 to discuss details of the proposed PIO University, sources at the PMO said on Sunday.
Overseas Indian Affairs (OIA) Minister Vayalar Ravi, Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh, Finance Minister P Chidambaram and Commerce Minister Kamal Nath will attend the meeting at South Block.
With the Prime Minister himself initiating the idea of a PIO University to be executed fully with PIO and NRI investment, the project has assumed special significance and preliminary works are progressing on a fast track under the aegis of the OIA Ministry.
"The proposal originally came from the PMO. But it received momentum after Vayalar Ravi took charge of the OIA ministry," official sources said.
The proposed university would offer courses on engineering, medicine, social sciences, IT and sciences.
