Gunmen attacked a police checkpoint south of Baghdad killing 14 people, including six policemen, said the Kut municipal police on Thursday.

A number of insurgents were also killed, an interior ministry official said, confirming the incident.

The attack happened late on Wednesday night just 30 kms south of the capital but, because it was inside neighbouring Wasit province, the bodies were taken to the provincial capital of Kut, 175 kms southwest of Baghdad.

Police in Kut also reported finding 18 bodies in the Tigris river, showing signs of torture and said had all been shot.
