Kalita is said to be a friend of arrested TV reporter Gaurav Jyoti Neog, who is accused of instigating a mob of 20 men to molest a young girl outside a busy nightspot in the Assamese capital on July 9.

Sources said the Guwahati Police were tracking Kalita’s mobile phone and intercepted a call he made to his brother, telling him about his plan to move to the holy city. This tip was passed on to the local police.

Sources said Kalita was hiding out at a rented accommodation for the last two days. “The Guwahati Police have been informed and their team will arrive on Tuesday to take his custody,” SP Santonsh Singh said.

“We are questioning him on when and how he arrived and if he had local help,” an officer said.

Kalita criss-crossed the country on the run — Bhubaneswar, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Howrah, Barabanki in UP, Lucknow and finally Varanasi.

Twelve other accused have been arrested in Guwahati so far.
