Besides, the court directed the government to strictly monitor factories as per assurance and that treatment plant at Naini, Allahabad should work on full scale until further orders of the court.

Passing this order, a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice AN Ray and Justice Ashok Bhushan fixed February 8, for monitoring further progress.

Today, as per order of the court, an affidavit was filed on behalf of the Narora authorities re-affirming the facts that discharge of 450 cusec of water was continuing from January 2. The court was further assured that it would continue till completion of Magh Mela as per the instructions already issued.

On behalf of the State Government, it was pointed out to the court that complete monitoring of all effluent discharge from factories at Kanpur was being done and no effort was being spared to prevent coloured discharge of effluent from such factories.

It was also submitted on behalf of the State as well as UP Pollution Control Board that the treatment plant at Naini in Allahabad and pumping of water, which takes care of about 90 MLD of waste water discharge, was also being continued in full swing.

It was also pointed out on behalf of the State Government that there was some improvement in the quality as well as the level of water at Sangam point.

The court passed this order on a public interest litigation (PIL) petition filed by Harchetan Brahmachari Ji Mahraj.

In the PIL, it was alleged that there was pollution and scarcity of water at Ganga at Magh Mela, Allahabad, where lakhs of pilgrims have assembled to take a holy dip at Sangam, the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. At one stage, as per the direction of the Court, Chief Secretary of UP had filed affidavit stating that 450 cusec of water has been discharged from Narora.

Lab techies’ selection challenged
THE ALLAHABAD High Court issued notice to All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi and vice-chancellor of UP Technical University, Lucknow and asked them to file reply within three weeks to a writ petition filed by one Subodh challenging the selection of five lab-technicians for Indian Engineering Division of Institute of Engineering and Rural Technology (IERT).

Justice AP Sahi passed the order after hearing counsel for the petitioner Rollie Kauser.

The petitioner alleged that there were extraneous considerations in the entire October 2005 selection process of 5 lab Technicians of IERT.

The petition alleged that selection was made on the basis of sham interview without clubbing the quality point marks based on the candidates’ experience and academic excellence. Besides, several other irregularities were committed.
