HC says no, but brandalism goes on

THE WRITING IS on the wall ? the student leaders can even get away with flouting high court orders! Once again, the boundary walls of the Lucknow University (LU) have been captured by the student leaders for campaigning purposes against high court orders. Even the hoardings along the university road and elsewhere have been grabbed by them to the advertisers’ chagrin. But, why is there no action on part of Lucknow University authorities and the district administration in this regard?
Sources say the student leaders’ close proximity to the ruling Samajwadi Party saves the former from all disciplinary actions.

LUSU general secretary Vinod Tripathi says: “It is the SP student leaders who have defaced the city to a great extent. When no action has been initiated against them, then why should we be worried? I’ve put up a very few hoardings. But, prominent SP student leaders have done many.”

The HC order says those resorting to defacing the campus and the city should not be allowed to contest the poll. So far LU has never cancelled the nomination of those candidates who flouted these norms.

In the name of action, LU has simply imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 each on 40 student leaders. But so far none of them have paid the money. The proctor office too has not pursued the matter with the student leaders and only sent them reminder to pay the penalty. The varsity even gave relaxation in its subsequent order and asked only those student leaders to pay the penalty who have defaced the campus only.

But that too did not evoke any positive response. Former LUSU vice president Pawan Pandey says: “This year I’ve not done any new wall-writing. Whatever wall-writing is there are those of the last year. So the university cannot take any action against me.” Proctorial Board, entrusted with the task of taking action against student leaders, only pleads haplessness.

Proctor AN Singh when contacted said that LU has already discussed the issue with the district administration as how to check the student leaders from defacing the campus. “We have sent a list of over 30 student leaders who have breached the HC order. We’ve have requested the district administration to realise the fine from the students and LU would extend its full support and co-operation,” said Singh while talking to HT Lucknow Live on Sunday.
