Heavy rains continue in TN, Puducherry

Heavy rains continue to lash Tamil Nadu and Puducherry due to the formation of a new trough of low pressure over Bay of Bengal with weathermen predicting more rains during the next 24 hours beginning this morning.

Heavy rains continue to lash Tamil Nadu and Puducherry due to the formation of a new trough of low pressure over Bay of Bengal with weathermen predicting more rains during the next 24 hours beginning this morning.

"A trough of low pressure extends from Sri Lanka to north Tamil Nadu coast across Palk Strait. Under its influence heavy rains is likely to occur northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the next 24 hours starting 8.30 am today," Met officials said here.

Moderate to rather heavy rain would occur at many places in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the period, they said.

Meanwhile, rains in Chennai and its suburbs since morning threw life out of gear. Commuters had to wade through flooded roads.

Traffic was also severely affected due to water-logging at different places. Trees were uprooted in many places.

Avinashi in Tiruppur district recorded a maximum of 5 cm rain during the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am today while Chennai recored a maximum of around 4 cm rain during the same period.

For Chennai, officials said that the sky conditions would be generally cloudy. Few spells of thundershowers or rain would occur in some areas.
