This is the year of experimentation and open spaces. Swati Pandya Sood tips you on the new trends in home decor this year...india Updated: Jan 08, 2009 15:46 IST
This is the year of experimentation and open spaces. The look will be clean and the ambience serene. Muted hues like beige, brown, dull gold and ivory will be in vogue with jamawar motifs and printed fabrics adding to the decor.
Patterns are back on the wall as POP (plaster of Paris), wallpapers or mirror designs and as upholstery on chairs and sofas. Monochromes have been ruling the colour palette for a long time. They will be replaced with new shades like antique ivory white and chocolate brown.
The emphasis will be on dramatic entrances and powder rooms. Cabanas, straight line couches and coffee tables will enhance the up-market, urban look. Mosaic floorings, abstract prints and accessories like seashells and corals will compliment the furniture.
Chandeliers will be big, giving the place a majestic and classy feel. White lamps and sheer fabrics will be used extravagantly when a party is hosted in an out-of-town farmhouse, the open space creating a bohemian atmosphere. The table will be set with cold cuts, cheese and cocktails like martinis and cosmopolitans.
Home fragrance products like candles, oil burners, potpourri and fragrant drawer liners are in again. In flowers it will be white roses, tulips and lilies.
If the look in 2008 was Parisian or Venetian, this year it will be more urbane and less beautiful.
