According to contactmusic.com, Howard's mother is suffering from cancer and the actor says he missed hearing joy in her voice. That joy returned when he called her up immediately after he heard he was nominated for the movie "Hustle And Flow".

He says: "She is going through chemotherapy right now but for the first time I heard in her voice - in two years - that person who was just happy and excited about life."
