HPAU organic farm gets certification for organic production standard

The model organic farm of Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University (HPAU) has been certified by Biocert India Pvt Ltd as per India's National Programme for Organic Production Standards.

The model organic farm of Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University (HPAU) has been certified by Biocert India Pvt Ltd as per India's National Programme for Organic Production Standards.

With this, the organic farm of this university has got the distinction of being the first government research institute in the state to be certified as a nodal centre for organic research.

Biocert is a leading certifying agency for organic farming in the country.

HPAU's model organic farm was established in 2006 with the objectives to generate information for organic cultivation of different crops in the state.

Later, it was upgraded to a full-fledged Department of Organic Agriculture in August 2009. Since then the research work on various aspects of organic farming is being done in this farm. After getting the certification, the department of organic agriculture will be able to sell their organic produce at higher price.

Vice-chancellor SK Sharma has appreciated the team of scientists of the organic farming department for getting the certificate and making organic farm as one of the leading certified organic farms in the country to benefit farmers of north region.

“This certified farm will be helpful in training of farmers and certification of their farms in future,” said Sharma.
