The Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) has pulled up landowners, who rent out their vacant plots in posh localities to slum dwellers and make huge money.
After frequent complaints by residents that the illegal shanties have become a hub of anti-social elements, officials decided to visit the sites to check the ground reality.
During a visit to Sushant Lok-1 on Monday, Huda administrator Praveen Kumar, accompanied by estate officer Mukesh Solanki, sub-divisional engineer AS Dangi and the local police, took a landowner to task and asked him to remove all hutments immediately.
The administrator instructed the police to book the landowner for running illegal set-ups like slums and causing a security threat to thousands of area residents. The authorities gave him a day’s time and deployed a Huda employee to ensure that the land was cleared.
Kumar has also instructed the police to monitor the evacuation process and take appropriate action, if needed.
“The slum dwellers are removing their belongings as they are scared of further action after the police warned them. A report in the matter has been sought,” said SS Rai, a member of the Sushant Lok residents’ welfare association.
The RWA has been pleading with the authorities to take action against the owners who live in nearby villages but lease out their land.
Apart from the slums being an eyesore, residents said they were afraid to venture out of their homes in the night.
Huda has also asked the developer, Ansal Properties and Infrastructure (API), to acquire the vacant plots from individuals and develop them. “We have asked the developer to acquire these plots and have also sought a detailed report to know why this has not been done till now,” said the administrator.
Sanjay Kumar, an official of API, said, “We are helpless in this regard as the land was neither acquired by the Huda nor did it come within our layout plan since they are vacant patches in the middle of the colony.”
“The slums have become a nuisance and threat for us,” added Kumar.
