Interacting with Congress and BSP MLAs in Dehradun as part of her efforts to muster support for July 19 presidential poll, she expressed optimism that with their support she would become country's first woman President.

"In my public life spanning 45 years, I have faced several challenges. Despite attempts to tarnish my image, I am committed to uphold the highest tradition of democracy. I will continue to serve the nation with dedication," Patil said.

She thanked UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the Left for giving her a chance to contest the election for the top constitutional post.
