EDUCATION FOR socio-economic betterment is the need of the hour, said Prof K S Tiwari, regional director, Indira Gandhi National Open University ( IGNOU), while addressing the State coordinators’ meeting at Sanchi Complex here today.
Pointing at the existing problems in the State’s higher education set-up, Tiwari said conventional mode of higher education has been available for only seven per cent of the population whereas a major part of the population still remains deprived of education.
According to Tiwari, the IGNOU has offered to the people 117 different courses through its Open Distant Learning (ODL) system.
The system has enabled people from every region to get education while still carrying out their daily works. This is for all people irrespective of their age, sex, region, caste or religion.
Addressing the meet Dr P Sivaswaroop, deputy director, IGNOU, appealed to the coordinators from different districts of the State to make all-out efforts to popularise the distant learning system and publicise the new courses.
Coordinators from Bhopal, Jabalpur, Gwalior, Indore, Satna, Rewa, Jhabua, Balaghat, Katni and several other districts participated in the meeting.
