Sri Lanka collapsed to be all out for just 164 in the 48th over of their innings with Tillakaratne Dilshan top-scoring with 42 while Shane Bond, Jacob Oram and Kyle Mills captured three wickets each.

New Zealand cruised to victory in the 38th over with Peter Fulton unbeaten on 70 and Hamish Marshall not out 16. Opener Jamie How also made 58 on debut.

The five-game series was originally due to be played a year ago but was postponed after just one match, won by New Zealand, when parts of Asia, including Sri Lanka, were hit by a tsunami.

Earlier, Sri Lanka collapsed to be all out for just 163.

Tillakaratne Dilshan top-scored with 42 off 54 balls while captain Marvan Atapattu made 35 off 56 deliveries and Russel Arnold 25 off 41 balls but no one else made 20.

New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond, playing his first match on home soil in almost three years, captured 3-28 while Jacob Oram and Kyle Mills both took 3-31 off their 10 overs.

The five-game series was originally due to be played a year ago but was postponed after just one match, won by New Zealand, when parts of Asia, including Sri Lanka, were hit by a tsunami.

Sri Lanka made a bright start to Saturday's match, reaching 23 without loss after the first eight overs, when things suddenly went wrong.

Sanath Jayasuriya fell for 12 when he was caught by Lou Vincent at point off Mills then Kumar Sangakkara departed for a duck when he edged an inswinger off Bond to Peter Fulton at slip.

Sri Lanka slumped to 41-4 when Mahela Jayawardene (one) and opener Upul Tharanga (17) were both caught by wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum off Oram before Dilshan and Atapattu steadied the innings with a 64-run stand for the fifth wicket.

Their partnership ended when Jamie How, making his one-day international debut, held a low catch at square leg to get rid off Atapattu.

Sri Lanka's resistance ended when Dilshan followed shortly after, caught by Lou Vincent off Bond, and the last five wickets tumbled for just 31 runs.
