Dr Sanjay Dhande, Director of the IIT-K, inaugurated the film festival and said that no matter whatever profession one chose, one should retain and sustain one’s creativity.
Earlier, in the jam-packed auditorium nearly 1,500 students and professors of the IIT-K watched the national award winning movie Amu, which is based on 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The audience was impressed by the social message conveyed in the movie, which the theme line that the ’84 riots against Sikhs were not communal riots but were state-sponsored and it was every citizen’s responsibility to stand up against such atrocities in society so that such nefarious incidents should be avoided in future and people of India should live in harmony.
Prof Dhande said: “Creativity should be an essential component of everyone’s life and I, besides being an engineer, still take ample interest in movies and in theatre.”
Prof Dhande also described one incident of his life when he was studying in 6th standard and he played the character of Tanaji who was a minister of Shivaji, the great warrior. “Tanaji was about to get married when Shivaji asked him to fight against Moghuls who attacked their territory. Following the orders of Shivaji, Tanaji fought courageously and prevented Moghuls from seizing the palace. In the incident Tanaji laid down his life but left the message of courage and determination,” said Prof Dhande.
Dean of student affairs Prabal Sinha said: “I saw Amitabh Bachchan at hisyoung age when he was a tall lanky guy with no face but he carved a niche for himself by dint of his determination.”
