In trench town
Jean Paul Gaultier’s trench coat-inspired Privé Bag with its back flaps, big pockets and buckle belt, is still a craze among style-conscious ladies the world over.india Updated: Apr 12, 2010 18:30 IST
One of the styles that I noticed many designers following this season was the introduction of trench coats. Many designers this time came out with this style or interpreted this in their own ways to reveal different trench-coat inspired dresses and even cropped jackets.
I am not quite sure as to whether it was Burberry or Aquascutum that invented trench coats, but it has become a rage over the years. Both these brands are known well for their trench coats. Though initially invented as a raincoat, over the years, it has become a style to reckon with.
From coat to bag
Several international designers have re-interpreted it too. Jean Paul Gaultier’s trench coat-inspired Privé Bag with its back flaps, big pockets and buckle belt, for instance, is still a craze among style-conscious ladies the world over.
So, when I saw our designers thinking in the same manner on the runway I felt that finally they are beginning to think alike and some kind of a trend will emerge from the fashion week. This style was unique in a way and really stood out in their collections.
After each fashion week in fact, when I go back, my colleagues ask me, “So what trend came out this time?”I usually have no convincing answer to this. But then, if such trends emerge from fashion weeks, one can then safely think that fashion trends are coming out of such events and that designers are thinking alike.
This is important for a growing fashion industry such as ours. Season after season, who would want to see the same stuff in different colours anyway? For long we have seen it on our fashion runways. Each season, designers should come out with some things that are different and totally unpredictable to make their collection interesting.
And this happens not just here.Even on the western runways, some designers do the same old stuff every season.Atleast this way, I see that some respite in terms of variety on what we see on the fashion runway has emerged from this season onwards. If this continues to happen and if more and more such trends emerge from fashion weeks, coming seasons will be more interesting than ever before.
