The independent candidates improved their performance remarkably as compared to last election and accounted 25 seats against 19 in the last civic elections.
Toppling the apple-cart of frontline political parties, independent candidates played spoilsport for both the BJP and Congress. Several prominent leaders across all political parties lost to independent candidates. Rebel party candidates also constituted a sizable number of such independent candidates.
Just an example, Congress rebel Rajeev Lochan Pandey from ward number 97 Harbans Mohal defeated his nearest rival by a margin of over 1000 votes as an independent candidate after he was denied ticket by Congress.
Victory of an independent candidate Kailash Pandey from ward number 44 Om Purwa is also one of the most significant one. Pandey’s defeated the Congress candidate from the ward, which has the residence of the Union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal.
The most famous loss was recorded in Bingawan where despite all alleged administration’s support Balwant Yadav, grandson of SP bigwig Harmohan Singh Yadav, lost election. He was defeated with considerable margin by Congress’s Manoj Gupta. The police here was accused of capturing booths and stamping ballot papers for Yadav.
On the other Yasmeen Begum registered the most thumping victory among all the candidates. Of the polling of 6,500 votes, she mustered 5500 votes to defeat Rehana Begum by a margin of 4600 votes.
Meanwhile, large area geographically and sizeable number of voters once again accounted for maximum polling from Govind Nagar assembly constituency. About 3,40,280 voters cast their votes during the local bodies elections this year.
However, the lowest turn out was witnessed from the Aryanagar assembly constituency, which witnessed 80,916 voters casting votes.
Similarly, at Kalyanpur (1,60,029), Cantonment (76,646), Shishamu (1,03,526) and Generalganj (82,916) votes were polled.
