Jayant Talukdar made history as he became the first Indian archer to win the gold medal in the World Cup in Porec, Croatia on Saturday.

Talukdar defeated Swede Magnus Petersson 108-105 points in the finals. He had earlier beaten Italian Marco Galiazzo 109-108 points in the semi-finals, Sanjeeva Singh, secretary of the Jharkhand Archery Association and a former India captain, said in a statement.

On Friday, the Indian women's team, comprising Jhanu Hansda, Sakro Besra and Manjudha Soy, had won the silver medal in the compound event, losing to France.

The Indian men and women recurve teams had lost in the quarter-finals to Brazil and Great Britain respectively.

In all, 350 archers from 27 countries took part in the World Cup.
