The 2-0 routing of the Sri Lankans in the just concluded Videocon series was good enough to for Team India to displace England from the No 2 position in the latest LG ICC Test rankings.
This is the first time they have reached these heights in the four-and-a-half years since the official LG ICC Test Championship was launched in May 2001.
India on Thursday defeated Sri Lanka by 259 runs in the third and final Test in Ahmedabad and gained three points to climb a rung to second position with 115 points, two points ahead of England who lost to Pakistan 0-2 recently.
Before the three-Test series with Sri Lanka started, India was third in the rankings, a point behind second-placed England, which had 113.
Australia still maintain a comfortable lead with 128 points in their kitty.
The Islanders, meanwhile, are languishing at 7th spot with paltry 96 pts.
