Raj Kumar, 20, was believed beaten by 10 of his fellow countrymen late on Tuesday at his apartment in the central Selangor state, district deputy police chief Abdul Rahman Ibrahim said.

"The group of men were accusing the victim of being involved in the disappearance of their mobile phones," Rahman was quoted as saying by the Berita Harian daily.

The victim was immediately sent to hospital after neighbours alerted police. But he died several hours later from severe internal injuries as well as a broken left arm and leg.

Rahman said police had detained eight suspects, and added that they were still searching for two other men believed to be involved.
