The Indian Film Festival in Los Angeles began on April 14, 2004, with the sold-out North American premiere of Sudhir Mishra's Hazaaron Khwaishen Aisi, (A Thousand Dreams Such as These) at ArcLight Cinemas Hollywood!
IFFLA attendance was up more than 15 percent over 2003, with an estimated 7,000 festival goers attending the five-day run at ArcLight Cinemas Hollywood, the official home of the festival.
The festival which began a few years ago with key emphasis on films originating in the sub-continent saw packed houses for Rituparno Ghosh's Chokher Bali (A Passion Play), Vishal Bharadwaj's Maqbool, Kamal Hassan's Virumaandi and K.Asif's classic Mughal-e-Azam.
The festival included Bombay Melody - a section jointly curated by IFFLA and UCLA Film and Television Archive - a celebration of the great song-and-dance tradition of India's popular cinema.
Bombay Melody was held at ArcLight Hollywood with the screening of Mughal-e-Azam (The Great Mughal). The programme continued up till April 21 at the James Bridges Theater on the UCLA campus with evening screenings of contemporary Bollywood favourites like Mani Ratnam's Alaipayuthey (starring R. Madhavan), Nikhil Advani's Kal Ho Naa Ho (with current favourites Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan alongwith Preity Zinta), Rajkumar Hirani's Munnabhai M.B.B.S. (with Sanjay Dutt, Boman Irani and Arshad Warsi in lead roles) and Mathew Mathan's Sarfarosh (which stars the reclusive star Aamir Khan).
