The student was attacked on the street near the city's medical academy on Sunday evening, said the official, Sergei Sinitsyn.

"He suffered knife wounds and died in hospital. According to our preliminary information he wasn't able to say what had happened to him. The circumstances are being investigated," Sinitsyn said.

Saint Petersburg has a large foreign student population and has seen regular attacks on foreigners in 2005, amid concerns about a rising tide of extreme nationalism in the city.
