They also lose their virginity at a later age when compared to whites, black Caribbeans and black Africans.
A survey of more than 11,000 adults aged between 16 and 44 years, published in the latest issue of The Lancet magazine, shows that black Caribbean women have the highest rates of STIs, followed by black Caribbean men and black African men.
It shows that white women have more sexual partners than women from the other ethnic groups and that black men have an average of 50 per cent more lovers than white men.
White women claim to have had an average of five sexual partners, black Caribbean women four, black Africans three and Indians and Pakistanis one.
Among men, black Caribbean and Africans both boast nine lovers in their lifetime, followed by whites with six, Indians two and Pakistanis one.
When it comes to STIs, women mostly have a higher rate than men.
The percentage of men diagnosed with STIs was the highest among black Caribbean women (22.7 per cent) and men (19.7 per cent).
