Talks were "positive and outcome is concrete," External Affairs Minister K Natwar Singh said after a meeting with Pakistan Foreign Secretary Riaz Khokhar and his Indian counterpart Shashank.
"They have identified areas of future work," he told reporters adding he had encouraged them to carry on their efforts.
Khokhar and Shashank called on Singh after concluding their two days of discussions mainly focussing on peace and security, Jammu and Kashmir and confidence building measures.
Singh said both foreign secretaries had briefed him about their discussions. Khokhar said he was satisfied with the talks.
"The talks were indeed a positive and constructive engagement," Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman Masood Khan said in New Delhi.
"We have made forward movement in the overall context", Khan said after the Foreign Secretaries of the two countries held wide-ranging discussions.
Khokhar also called on Nation Security Advisor JN Dixit.
A joint statement, which is expected to become the basis for a 'roadmap' to peace in Jammu and Kashmir will be released later on Monday, an official said.
