The Mumbai police on Friday recorded the statement of Vidhie, the 18-year-old daughter of murder suspects Indrani Mukerjea and Sanjeev Khanna, who allegedly conspired to kill Sheena Bora – Indrani’s daughter with another partner – on April 24, 2012.

The police recorded Vidhie’s statement to complete the investigation into a number of emails sent to her, Indrani’s husband Peter Mukerjea, and Sheena’s brother Mikhail Bora, by someone pretending to be Sheena.

On Saturday, the police will produce Indrani, Khanna and driver Shyamwar Rai – the third accused – before the additional chief metropolitan magistrate’s court. Whether the police will ask for a further extension of the three suspects’ police custody remains to be seen. In any case, the most they can hope for is a two-day extension, as the three have been in custody for 12 days and the Criminal Procedure Code places a 14-day limit on police custody.

Rahul Mukerjea, Sheena’s fiancé and younger son of Peter Mukerjea from his previous marriage, was the first family member whose statement the police recorded. He told the cops that he had dropped Sheena to a spot near National College in Bandra on April 24, 2012, the day she was murdered.

He also told police officials that he had tried to file a missing-person complaint in 2012 but failed to do so because, having studied in the UK, he was unprepared for the red rape involved and the “crude” manner in which the police spoke to him. He said he also received a text message from Sheena’s phone on the day she was murdered, in which she wrote that she was calling off their engagement and moving to the US. The police suspect Indrani used Sheena’s phone to impersonate her.

Following Khanna’s arrest, the police recorded the statement of Mikhail Bora, Sheena’s brother. Later, they recorded the statement of Siddhartha Das, Indrani’s live-in partner from 1986 to 1989 and the biological father of Sheena and Mikhail.

The police also questioned Peter Mukerjea and recorded his statement over three consecutive days, during which Peter shared minute details of the family’s finances and properties.
