Vijay Singh was arrested after Sarvesh Singh’s family alleged that he had conspired with criminals to kill the former legislator.

Acting on a complaint lodged by Santosh Singh, elder brother of the late leader, the police arrested the inspector. The family of the slain leader has named eight other people in the FIR.

Sarvesh Singh, a former Samajwadi Party MLA from Sagri constituency who later moved to BSP, was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne youth when he was coming out of the Jiyanpur police station after meeting station officer Ramesh Singh.

The former legislator’s security guard was also killed during the shoot-out. His supporters had accused a police inspector of summoning him to the police station.

Following the murder of Singh, large-scale violence broke out in Jiyanpur town as his supporters indulged in arson and clashed with the police.
