In order to protect the interests of workers, the Indian embassy has teamed up with the New India Assurance Co Ltd to provide a two-year insurance cover.

The sponsor would have to pay a fee of ten Omani riyals (Rs 1,600) for a two-year cover, apart from the ticket.

The insurance cover will include provision of 2,000 Omani riyals (Rs 2.3 lakh), 100 per cent disability fees and 250 Omani riyals (Rs 29,000) for medical expenses, a source told the Times of Oman.

The rule also sets the minimum salary for a housemaid at 50 Omani riyals (Rs 5,800).

All employment contracts have to be attested by the labour department and the Indian Embassy.

These measures are expected to protect the interests of Indian expatriate labour, the sources said.
