Police then opened fired, leading to the death of a Bhil youth. The Bhil tribals tried to attack members of the Meena community in the village, angry over the alleged rape of a woman, Guna Additional SP Avadhesh Goswami said.
Kumbhraj Town Inspector V S Sapre who along with some police personnel reached the village to control the situation. Sapre, while trying to restore order, sustained fatal head injuries after being hit by stones thrown by the tribals, DIG Adarsh Katiyar said.
Other sources said the Bhils attacked Sapre with a sharp weapon. The injured police official was identified as sub-Inspector B S Parmar.
Police officers with additional forces rushed to the village, also called Konya Kalan. The Bhils were protesting police inaction on two Meena community members who had allegedly raped the Bhil woman in August. The Bhils on Sunday organised a panchayat and decided to attack the Meena community members. Thy reportedly clashed with policemen when they were prevented from attacking the villagers.
