My wife and I are in a dilemma. Our son has just given his Class X exams and the results are expected soon. The relief we felt when the exams got over in March has been substituted with high anxiety levels. For it will soon be time to make that decision that we’ve been postponing for so long — our son Aditya’s life depends on it. The issue: the subject stream he will enter in Class XI.

The issue would have been settled without sweat if left to Aditya alone. However, enlightened parents are not ready to hand over the baton so easily. At a family conclave post the exams, options were scanned, deliberated upon, evaluated and discarded. But in a participative democracy such as our home, the ‘people’ (read: Aditya), whose choice it ideally should have been, was made a silent spectator. His opinion not considered relevant.

I, the self-acclaimed corporate know-all, rooted for a dream path, commencing with the engineering stream and terminating with a CEO slot for Aditya. This leaning was partly buoyed by media reports of B-school grads commanding astronomical salaries. Then, of course, I was also enthused by finance and accountancy, seeing what investment bankers were achieving in this era of booming bourses.

Vocational courses leading to a career in fashion designing were also in my realm of ‘fantasy’. I had always wanted to have a front row seat at those fashion shows. I am informed that designer’s parents enjoy such privilege.

My vacillation was considered a weakness and the business plan(s) shot down.

Poonam, my gynaecologist wife, had visions of a doctor strolling down the hospital corridors, stethoscope casually slung over his shoulders. I saw through her proposition. She needed help at the clinic. The next day’s HT carried pictures of a water canon bursting upon aspiring medicos. This put paid to any hopes of pursuing the noble profession.

We left it at that. The decision will be postponed till the results come out.

Meanwhile, Aditya has been the harbinger of news such as his friends joining tutorials for engineering and medical entrance exams. We (sic) have yet to decide for our son? Incidentally, Aditya is bored with our board dilemma.
