It's official. St Xavier's remains the most preferred college for Mumbai's students. A recent HT-C fore survey that polled 513 students between 14 and 16 years shows that the south Mumbai institution is still the first choice - across academic streams - for those passing out of school.

It received 34 per cent of the vote from arts aspirants, while 31 per cent thought it was the city's best science college. It also emerged as the most preferred commerce college, even though it has only an evening course, with 18 per cent giving it the thumbs up.

If the winner was no surprise, the runner-up certainly was. Elphinstone College, once glorious but thought to have become a laggard on the academic scene in recent times, garnered 15 per cent votes in arts and 16 per cent in science.

However, it did not figure in the top five ranks in commerce.

The results did not surprise the St Xavier's management. Principal Father Frazer Mascarenhas said they were "expected".
