Party chief and Minister of State for Railways E Ahamed said the party took the decision to support Congress and UPA candidates to "strengthen the hands of (Congress chief) Sonia Gandhi and (Prime Minister) Manmohan Singh."
In a statement, he said the IUML "extends its whole hearted support to the Congress and other candidates of UPA like Trinamool Congress contesting by-elections in West Bengal, UP and other places."
He said the UPA under the leadership of Gandhi and Singh is "giving utmost priority and attention to the needs of the minorities in the country."
The by-polls are scheduled to be held for one Lok Sabha and 31 assembly seats spread across seven states including West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, tomorrow. Jharkhand assembly elections will be held in five phases in November and December.
